adventura expeditions safety awareness

All the activities of Adventura Expeditions are underpinned by the need for safety, for clients, instructors and the general public. Our Safety Policy (part of our operating plan) is there for the guides and instructors to continually evaluate and upgrade Safe Practices.

See our general safety awareness page, or each section's specific safety information.

adventura mountainboarding

Adventura Mountainboarding is the premier provider of mountainboarding holidays throughout Europe, with three major holiday centres; Cortina d’Ampezzo Italy, Scotland and the Pyrenees.

Guided holidays are custom made for beginners or experts. UK trips or instruction are also available for individuals, families, groups and schools, see website.

Mal & Andy are both top level ATBA (All Terrain Boarding Association) Instructors and both pioneered mountainboard guiding, writing the instruction manual for alpine descents and race training with and without brakes.

Mountainboarding doesn't have to be extreme riding. Cortina provides beautiful grass covered 4km runs, utilising the ski runs and the ski lifts back up. Ring Mal on 0844 587 3025 to book a holiday tailor made for you.

As well as working with Mal and adventura expeditions on Mountain Leader trips and Via Ferrata, I will also be the Arctic Experience partner with my company, snowball expeditions. To celebrate this partnership, Mal and I have put together a very special Arctic Experience package for this season only. Have a look at the details here.

I have a full year ahead, just returning off ice having trained with Eric Larson for his Save the Poles expeditions in 2009. I am in Scotland this week doing my Winter Mountain Leader course - miss your tea in the morning Mal.

Welcome to my blog, a journal of my activities. I will shortly be including a podcast which can be accessed here.

I am adventura expeditions' mountain training officer, see my profile for more info. I am currently putting up the second Via Ferrata route at Honiston and helping organise the Keswick Mountain Festival for May.

Via Ferrata

A Via Ferrata (Iron Way), is a fixed protection climbing path, generally a wire rope secured to the rock every few metres, sometimes supplemented by pegs or ladders, mostly found in the Dolomites mountain range in north eastern Italy. A Via Ferrata may be horizontal, vertical or a combination and can involve ascent and descent. The location we use of Cortina d’Ampezzo is fantastic, the refuge sits 1000m above the town of Cortina with panoramic views of the mountains.

We have a highly qualified team of Via Ferrata instructors. Gavin Baxter, our mountaineering training officer, set up the UK's only Via Ferrata in the Lake District and is currently doing the second. Each day’s route/activity is logged with the refuge and the Carabinieri (Mountain Police). We have extensive knowledge of the surrounding area and permissions - having spent 6 seasons there, this allows us, for example, to get closer to the via ferrata negating a long walk in/out.

We also have:
• Italian language provision.
• safety management protocols
• guides are expedition first aid trained and carry a two way radio

See our Via Ferrata page for more information on equipment, experience, insurance and an itinery example. We will be producing blogs for groups and schools and a web gallery along with a dvd/slideshow presentation.
